Sciatica is something we treat regularly at Feel Amazing Wellness Centre in Chatswood. It typically presents as pain that radiates from the lower back or buttock down through the leg, and it can range from a dull ache to sharp, shooting discomfort. Sciatica can develop for a number of reasons, including irritation of the sciatic nerve, lower back dysfunction, muscle tension or inflammation around the lower back and gluteal region. In many cases, several factors may be involved at once.
If sciatica is affecting your ability to sit, stand, walk or sleep comfortably, our team can help.
Common causes we see
- Muscle tension or spasm in the lower back and gluteal muscles putting pressure on the sciatic nerve
- Postural imbalances from prolonged sitting
- Lifting or bending awkwardly
- Strain from physical activity
- Compensation patterns from other injuries
How we can help
Massage can help release the muscle tension that may be contributing to irritation around the sciatic nerve. Targeted work on the lower back, gluteal muscles, piriformis and surrounding areas can reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve and provide relief. Deep tissue techniques are often used for this condition. Learn more about massage.
Dry needling may help address deep muscle tension and trigger points in the gluteal muscles, piriformis and lower back that can be difficult to reach with hands-on treatment alone. Many people find it helpful for reducing tightness, improving movement and easing discomfort associated with sciatica. Learn more about dry needling.
Chiropractic assessment of the lower back and pelvis can help identify areas of stiffness, restricted movement and musculoskeletal tension that may be contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include hands-on joint techniques, gentle mobilisation, soft tissue work and movement-based rehabilitation tailored to your situation. Learn more about chiropractic.
Acupuncture may help support pain management for sciatica and is commonly used alongside manual therapies. It can help with both the pain itself and the tension that often accompanies it. Learn more about acupuncture.
Naturopathy may help where sciatica is persistent or recurring. There may be lifestyle, stress or nutritional factors worth considering alongside physical treatment. Our naturopath Anthony can advise on nutritional support, sleep, stress management and general wellbeing factors that may influence how your body manages pain and recovery. Our team approach
Some people benefit from combining different treatment approaches for sciatica, while others improve well with a single type of care. Depending on your symptoms, treatment may focus on reducing muscle tension, improving movement, supporting recovery or helping you manage ongoing flare-ups more comfortably.
Our practitioners can communicate with each other where appropriate and help guide you towards the approach that best suits your individual situation. We are also happy to work alongside your GP, physiotherapist or other healthcare providers if you are already receiving care elsewhere.
What you can do at home
- Keep moving gently. Avoid prolonged bed rest. Gentle walking can help reduce muscle tension and keep things moving.
- Apply heat or ice if recommended by your practitioner. Different types of pain can respond differently depending on the cause of your symptoms.
- Stretch carefully. Gentle stretches for the lower back, hamstrings and piriformis can help. Ask your practitioner for stretches specific to your situation.
- Pay attention to your posture. If you sit for long periods, take regular breaks to stand and move.
The information on this page is general in nature. If you have a serious, worsening or persistent condition, please consult your GP or specialist. Our practitioners will take a health history, discuss your individual situation and obtain your consent before treatment begins.
